The Memory Exhibition

Possibly the most amazing of biological structures is the human brain. This ball of gelatinous mass contains billions of neurons, which are interconnected to the point that the connections in one brain outnumber the amount of atoms in the universe!
Today’s FamilyFirst site celebrates one of the amazing brain’s most amazing functions: memory.
The site is presented by Exploratorium, who has been online since 1993. They present over 15,000 web pages and serve 18 million visitors a year with subjects that range from the science of gardening to the origin of the universe. The actual Exploratorium is in San Francisco, but its online presence transcends national boundaries.

The Memory Exhibition takes you through a dissection of a sheep brain to show you the physical structures responsible for short- and long-term memory.
There is also an exhibit of Italian-born artist Franco Magnani, who left his childhood home of Pontito in 1958, and who now paints pictures of the area entirely from memory. Photographs juxtaposed over the paintings show that he gets most details perfect! Differences can be explained by the changed perspective a child saw, as opposed to an adult. What an amazing demonstration of memory.
There is a forum where you are encouraged to share your earliest childhood memory. It’s a fascinating overview of what humanity recalls. There is seemingly no pattern, with memories ranging from experiences with pain to movies to funerals to food. It’s a fun read.
There are memory games, too, and they will enlighten you on how the process of remembering works.
So enjoy today’s FamilyFirst site with a scientific bent. And perhaps you will gain some insight on the amazing process of memory.
